Steeline Enclosure Solutions knows that picking out the right stainless-steel enclosure can be a daunting task. Factors to consider are what materials will the enclosure protect, from what environments will the enclosure protect the contents, what type of enclosure material is ideal, how many doors on the enclosure are ideal, and even what type of latch best serves the needs of the application. In this article we’ll look at the quarter turn latch, its pros and cons, and which Steeline products offer a quarter-turn latch.
What Is a Latch, Anyway?
Wikipedia defines latch as a type of mechanical fastener that joins two (or more) objects or surfaces while allowing for their regular separation. A latch typically engages another piece of hardware on the other mounting surface.
When considering which electrical enclosure will best meet your needs, one of the factors to consider is how often the enclosure will need to be opened and at what ease can the enclosure be opened. The value of the enclosure’s contents and the degree of security desired will impact what type of latch is required.
Why Are Quarter-turn Latches Common in Electrical Enclosures?
Steeline Enclosure Solutions uses basic compression quarter turn latch inserts that are flush slotted inserts. All electrical enclosure applications will require a degree of protection by either the IP or NEMA classification. The sealing or gasket in the enclosure must be compressed to a certain level to conform to the required IP or NEMA classification. Consequently, a compression latch is required.
Which Steeline Products Offer a Quarter Turn Latch?
The “SJB” Continuous Hinge “SJB” Junction Box is intended for both indoor and outdoor usage in corrosive and non-corrosive environments. 4 and 4X enclosures are intended for instrument housings, electrical control enclosures, terminal wiring boxes and electrical junction boxes. If equipment is consistently exposed to water, harmful chemicals, contaminants and liquids, this junction box is intended to protection the equipment under these circumstances.
Door and housing are built from carbon steel with exterior and interior surfaces painted in ANSI 61 textured Gray. Optional mounting panel available.
“SJB” Continuous Hinge Configuration:
Single door Type 4 or 4X
180 degree left hand hinge capability
The “SW” Series Single/Double Quarter Turn Latch enclosure is designed to protect against harsh climate, dirty environments, dust, dirt, oil, consistent exposure to water or other contaminants.
*Single door enclosure less than 20” high has one ¼ Turn Latch
*Single door enclosure 20” – 36” high have two ¼ Turn Latch
*Single door enclosure greater than or equal to 36” to have single handle three point latch
*Double door enclosure greater than or equal to 36” to have single handle three point latch
